Rock Ovens of the Okanagan
Okanagan Heritage Museum 470 Queensway Avenue, Kelowna, British Columbia, CanadaThe Okanagan Valley has one of the best collections of historic rock ovens anywhere in the world. These ovens were built over a hundred years ago by workers on the Kettle Valley Railway and also on irrigation projects in Belgo and Black Mountain. This presentation explores those ovens, but focuses more on the men who built them – almost certainly Italian labourers who came to Canada for the jobs created as a young nation created the infrastructure required to tame the wilderness.
