Ursula Surtees Regional Conservation Laboratory
The Ursula Surtees Regional Conservation Laboratory is one of the most current, state-of-the-art conservation laboratories in the country. Here, the Conservator cares for the Kelowna Museums Society’s artefact collection and ensures that the museum environment is safe and secure. Maintaining best practice standards, the Conservator manages the Society’s Preventative Conservation Program and monitors the museum’s internal environmental conditions and examines, documents, and appropriately treats artefacts in the collection to ensure that they are safe from harm. The Conservator also works on the Society’s Regional Conservation Outreach Program and assesses various works from the City of Kelowna’s Public Art Program. In addition, the Conservator also participates in collections management, exhibitions, and education activities and is helping to develop conservation opportunities within the Society, city, and region.
The Ursula Surtees Regional Conservation Laboratory was officially opened in 2001 in honour of its namesake, Ursula Surtees, who served as the Curator and Director under the Kelowna Museums Society for many decades and who has provided a lasting legacy for the continued preservation and interpretation of Okanagan heritage.
